For the April 2015 box, Birchbox teamed up with Mad Men and curated a box of products that could be used to create a ‘modern-retro’ look, similar to the gals in the show.
Birchbox subscribers had the option to choose this box, or go with a random sample choice box. As you can see, I chose the Mad Men box this month after getting a preview of the box contents and seeing that some of my favorite products/brands were included, plus ones that I wanted to try out for the first time.
Here is the little intro card that comes with the box that points out the inspiring style, hair, and makeup featured on Mad Men, all of which are tied into the products in this Birchbox.
Now to the box contents! The April Mad Men Birchbox included five samples that covered all the basics – skincare, haircare, makeup, brows, and even (yummy smelling) shave cream!
Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Blueberry – Full size: $20
I received this same exact shave cream (scent and everything) in a previous Birchbox a long while back, and was excited to receive yet another sample. The blueberry cream smells so yummy! Plus, it keeps my skin moisturized even after my showers. If I could just bring myself to pay the $20 for the full size…
Liz Earle Eyebright Soothing Eye Lotion – Full size: $25
This is a new product to me – not just the brand, but the whole idea of a lotion that is made especially for the eyes, and is supposed to help refresh, depuff, and remove makeup residue. I am very excited to try this over the next couple mornings. (I only wish I got this sooner, so I could use it during the dry winter months!)
Beauty Protector Protect & Oil – Full size: $25.95
I actually received this in my last Birchbox, but absolutely did not mind getting a back up! I love the smell of this oil and the softness it adds to the hair. I plan to bring this little guy with me on trips to the beach or the pool (I always like to add some oil to protect my hair from drying out from chlorine or salt – and this oil would definitely help lock in moisture.)
Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel – Full size: $22
I didn’t get a chance to try this out yet, but so far I have been impressed with the Anastasia brow powder (check out my review here) and have been looking forward trying out some of her other brow products. Updates to come!
Cargo Swimmables Water Resistant Blush in Los Cabos – Full size: $26
The Cargo Swimmables Blush in Los Cabos is gorgeous and my favorite product from this box. The blush has just the right amount of shimmer in it to really brighten up the skin. The shade itself is described as a ‘soft tangerine’, and is on the warmer side.
As for being water resistant, I tested this out myself and found that the blush did in fact stay put after being exposed to water, and even lasted after two-three hard rubs (but by the fourth rub, it did start to wipe away). I can’t wait until the weather warms up so I can test this after a swim at the pool!
Also, the pigmentation is excellent. Here’s a swatch of Los Cabos after one quick swish in the pan:
Overall, I was very happy with my April Birchbox. It came with a nice range of products, both long time favorites and new ones to try out. Plus, the total value of the five samples came out to over $25, so for the $10 cost of the box, I’d say you get your money’s worth with this one!
