I’ve been on the hunt for some unique yet everyday wearable highlighters for some time now – along the lines of pale greens, lilacs, and icy blues. I was tempted to try out Colourpop’s, but shied away thinking they’d be too shimmery and over-the-top (just judging by my experience with Monster – a shade that’s supposedly ‘tamer’ than the rest, though I still find it to be too much).
Then I stumbled across these beautiful, relatively new duo compacts from one of my favorite brands for budget-friendly buys – e.l.f. Cosmetics – and I had to give them a try. Here’s my review of e.l.f.’s Prismatic Highlighting duos, along with a quick look…

e.l.f. Prismatic Highlighting Duo Review
First off, let me start by saying I’m all about very minimal, subtle makeup looks. I rarely use highlighter and contour, and on my fanciest days, I tend to just dot on one my favorite cream highlighters, like Vapour’s or RMS Beauty’s, on the tops of my cheeks. But every once in a while, I like to experiment with either an edgier look, or something more ethereal, while still keeping things fairly subtle. And these e.l.f. Prismatic Highlighting Duos fit the bill perfectly.
Their texture is soft and almost chalk-like. They apply effortlessly and create a smooth, even finish. There’s no glitter or shimmer in any of the shades, just soft, subtle color with a slight iridescence. (There’s no ‘prism’ or ‘holographic’ finish as the name implies.)
The colors are also buildable. You can apply them with a light hand for the most subtle highlight and color that’s only noticeable when the light hits. Or layer them by loading up your brush, or going 4-5x over the same area, to get full-on color and a vibrant sheen at almost every angle.
Below, I applied the blue-purple shade in Blue Lagoon on my cheekbones using a small tapered highlighter brush in 2 light layers (this shade is nearly identical to the blue-purple shade in Mermaid’s Tail). I then applied 2 layers of the pale green shade from Blue Lagoon on my brow bone using a fluffy blending brush, and blended it down onto the cheeks.

Overall, I highly recommend picking up one of these compacts if you’re looking to experiment with unique shades, while still getting a subtle, everyday wearable highlight.
