Fragrance By Me
Just recently launched on August 1st, the Fragrance By Me online shop allows anyone to create their own original signature scent, with the scent manufactured by professionals in France. That may sound scary at first, but they help take the ‘guesswork’ out of the process and make it fun! They start by working off of your current favorite scents, allowing you to select your favorites notes while they’re in the background mixing and matching notes that work together. It’s a truly unique experience that gives you just the right amount of control to make it easy, but also full of options to make the scent yours. Of course, as a huge perfume enthusiast myself, I was especially anxious to try out!
How It Works
Here’s how it works when you visit Fragrance By Me to create your custom perfume kit:
- You’ll start by entering in your favorite fragrances out of their expansive database that includes everything from niche to luxury fragrances. By telling Fragrance By Me what you already know and love, they can tell you what notes are in these perfumes to help create a personalized scent profile for you.
- Then you’ll select up to 3 note categories (like woody, rosy, citrusy, etc) that are based on your previously entered fragrance favorites.
- Finally, you’ll get to choose up to 3 undertones (like oakmoss, amber, lily of the valley, etc) that complement the notes you initially selected.
In the end, rather than picking out each and every note to be mixed into your fragrance (which can be a bit intimidating!), you’re mainly selecting categories of notes and letting Fragrance By Me work their magic and perfume expertise to create something that blends perfectly together.
After finishing the online questionnaire, you’ll receive a kit in the mail within 1-2 weeks that includes your 3 sample scents: one being the fragrance created from the notes you just put together, and the other two being slight variations based on your profile and selections. The sample sizes are quite generous, sized at about 3 ml and filled to capacity!
Next step is to choose your favorite from the three. You’ll want to take your time on this – Fragrance By Me includes a little tip sheet in the perfume package so you can have the best experience, and fully appreciate and test out the fragrances. Once you’ve decided which fragrance you want to go with, you simply tell them which of the 3 fragrances you loved and order your first .5 oz bottle (~$40 US)!
My Fragrance By Me Experience & Review
I was given the exciting opportunity to collaborate with Fragrance By Me just before their launch in August. Having a deep love for more niche and masculine scents – with oakmoss and vetiver as my favorite notes – I was curious what they’d be able to put together for me.
To start, I listed out three of my favorite fragrances, including Maison Martin Margiela Replica Jazz Club, L`Artisan Parfumeur Fleur de Narcisse, and Miller Harris Bourbon Vetiver. From there, Fragrance By Me pulled together my Perfume Profile and then gave me the option to select my favorite notes – my two picks were green and earthy. They also suggested a few specific notes that would complement my initial selections. Of those, I choose lily of the valley, bergamot, and sandalwood.
Being someone picky when it comes to fragrances, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I received my samples. But to my surprise, the fragrances were amazing quality, and had just the right amount of sillage, and slightly varying staying power (lasting an average of 6-8 hours).
Strangely enough, I actually wasn’t too crazy about the scent I had helped develop, but loved the other two – I was seriously torn when it came to choosing my favorite! But after finally narrowing it down, I ended up with the final product – the perfect autumn and winter fragrance, which I named ‘Aoibhneas’ (an Irish word that typically refers to the joy we feel from external things, like beautiful sights, sounds, scents, etc). The scent has an earthy, warm woodsy core complemented by green leafy notes and oakmoss, then mixed with some airy notes. I put it on and am instantly transported to a damp forest on a moonlit night, with a cool breeze picking up the scents of the forest floor. 🙂
In the end, it’s really an amazing feeling to have a unique scent that’s personalized and completely unique and different from what other people are wearing.
